Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
